Tiroler Tageszeitung (Innsbruck), youth page “Welt der Jugend”, “TT-Discjockey” column: „Hier und dort ...“
Holli Pop
Column: as a counterweight to the disco charts, the author salutes the Jazzzwio. Pepl and Pirchner had recently shown their skill at the Manhattan School of Music in New York as a presentation of the current Austrian scene.

G. Wiesenthaner

Kleine Zeitung (daily newspaper, Graz), “Jazzkeller” column: „Jazz-Zwillinge auf Erfolgskurs“
Werner Krause / Leo Lukas
Review of the ECM LP by Pirchner, Pepl and DeJohnette (recorded on a Sunday afternoon), with an announcement of the concert that same evening, Thursday, 16 June 1983, 8 pm, at the Studentenhaus Münzgrabenstraße 59 in Graz, Austria. The newspaper quotes a critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (one of Germany’s leading national dailies).
This really ought not to exist: that in neighbouring Austria such mastery should ripen virtually unnoticed.
A quotation at second hand: the Kleine Zeitung, a Graz daily newspaper, reproduces the voice of a critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a leading German daily, on the Jazzzwio and the ECM LP with Jack DeJohnette.

Süd-Ost-Tagespost (Graz daily newspaper): „Air, love and vitamines“
A. P.
Short review of the Jazzzwio concert at the Münzgrabenheim in Graz, Austria, in June 1983. The titles of the pieces carry personal memories, such as “Air, love and vitamines” (with a reference to the German Romantic poet Eichendorff), “Leben eines Taugenichts” and “African Godchild” (after Pirchner’s godchild). Pepl is named as the probable future professor of guitar in the Graz jazz department.

VOX musik hifi & video (Viennese music magazine), May 1983: „Veredeltes Zwio“
K. G.
Conversation between the editors and Pepl and Pirchner about Jack DeJohnette and the ECM LP: the encounter at the jazz festival in Saalfelden, Austria (given in the magazine as “’81”; the archive dates the jam session to September 1980), a further gig at the Jazzspelunke, a jazz club in Vienna, contact with Manfred Eicher, the studio day, plus plans for the future (Saalfelden, Paris with Harry Sokal and Dave Holland, a next ECM album with DeJohnette and, if all goes well, Keith Jarrett) and record tips. The editors also report that the Zwio is very well known and appreciated in musicians’ circles, including Chick Corea and Pat Metheny; of Metheny they relate that before his Vienna concert he had the record by Pepl, Pirchner and DeJohnette played to him in the dressing room. Pirchner also explains why the Zwio switched to English titles and gives the original title of “Air, Love and Vitamines”.
Hearing Jack drumming behind you, that’s the best feeling there is.
Pepl in conversation with the Viennese music magazine VOX about playing with Jack DeJohnette, the American drummer of Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett; coloured by Viennese speech (“is des” for “ist das”).
Harry Pepl
… ‘The Crapped-On Wandering Lad’, but you can’t very well bring that out in Japan.
Pirchner explains why the Zwio switched to English titles; on the piece “Air, Love and Vitamines” (printed “Ait” in the issue). Viennese and coarse: “angschissen” means roughly “in a bad way”, literally “crapped on”; “net”: not.
Werner Pirchner
And then the modest, reserved Werner Pirchner told us the top sensation. The Zwio’s next ECM album (recording date: summer as well) will again feature Jack DeJohnette, and if all goes well (‘That could easily work out’): Keith Jarret in person!
A plan that was not realised: in May 1983 Werner Pirchner told the editors of the Viennese music magazine VOX that the next ECM album of the Jazzzwio (recording in summer 1983) would again feature Jack DeJohnette and, if all went well, Keith Jarrett. No recording in this line-up is known. “Des kennt si’ leicht ergeben”: Viennese for “that could easily work out”.
VOX (Redaktion), nach Werner Pirchner
Pleasing for the Zwio, too, that they are very well known and appreciated above all in musicians’ circles; Chick Corea, for instance, and Pat Metheny, who before his Vienna concert had the Pepl/Pirchner/DeJohnette record played to him in the dressing room, to get into a jazzy mood.
Report by the editors of the Viennese music magazine VOX, not a statement by Chick Corea or Pat Metheny themselves: Corea and Metheny are said to be among the musicians for whom the Zwio is very well known and appreciated. Only of Metheny do the editors relate that before his Vienna concert he had the ECM record by Pepl, Pirchner and DeJohnette played to him in the dressing room.
VOX (Redaktion)
Jack is simply number 1 on the drums, he can play with any musician in the world

The playful wit and inventiveness mean that the well-rehearsed Zwio never sounds routine at any point.

newspaper, presumably Volksstimme (Vienna daily newspaper), not confirmed (clipping without masthead; photo Rainer Rygalyk): „Ein Zwio im Höhenflug“
Helmut Rizy
Interview with Pepl and Pirchner on the new ECM LP with DeJohnette: the Saalfelden session in autumn 1980, Montreux 1981, a festival in Italy, the studio day in Ludwigsburg (Germany) and record tips. The clipping carries a duo photo by Rainer Rygalyk. The newspaper cannot be identified from the clipping; it is presumed to be the Viennese Volksstimme, for which Rizy worked as an editor.
As a result the pieces acquire a density that gives the impression of a calm, calming floating.
From the interview on the ECM LP by Pirchner, Pepl and DeJohnette.
No pigeonhole could be padded so nicely that we would want to climb into it.

March 1983 · Report · DE
unidentified newspaper (clipping without masthead, p. 9): Pat Metheny hört das Jazzzwio in der Jazzspelunke (Bildtext)
Picture caption to a photograph by Evelyn Tambour: the American guitarist Pat Metheny, who had returned to Vienna for a repeat concert after his success at the Wiener Konzerthaus (one of Vienna’s main concert halls), uses a free evening to hear the Jazzzwio of Pepl and Pirchner at the Jazzspelunke, a jazz club in Vienna, where they are playing with Marc Johnson and Joris Dudli. According to the caption he is as taken with the art of the Jazzzwio as with the club and decides at short notice to play there himself. The photograph shows Metheny, Pirchner and Pepl; the newspaper and the date of publication are not known, and March 1983 is inferred from the context. The photograph itself is not published; the original can be viewed after signing in.
Metheny was not only taken with the art of the Jazzzwio, but also with the Spelunke.
Picture caption to a newspaper photograph: the American guitarist Pat Metheny hears the Jazzzwio with Marc Johnson and Joris Dudli at the Jazzspelunke, a jazz club in Vienna, and decides to play there himself; “Spelunke” (literally a dive) is here the short form of the club’s name.
