Sterz, Zeitschrift für Literatur, Kunst und Kulturpolitik (Graz), no. 32: „Der Riese aus dem Fuchsloch. Eine Anbiederung an Werner Pirchner, hingehudelt“
Heimo Steps
Portrait of Werner Pirchner by Heimo Steps, founder of gamsbART (Graz concert promoter), in the Graz magazine “Sterz”. Steps calls Harry Pepl Pirchner’s “musical alter ego”, quotes Le Monde (“a giant of improvisation”), praises the Jazzzwio’s Montreux record and “Air, Love & Vitamins”, and reports that Steve Swallow toured Europe with Pirchner and Pepl in the summer of 1984. He recalls a night after a concert at the Graz jazz club M 59 around 1977, when he philosophised with the two in the empty hall until dawn. Online on the website of the Edition Werner Pirchner.
Harry Pepl: the giant from Hernstein in Lower Austria, “a giant of improvisation” (Le Monde), W.P.’s musical alter ego.
The Pirchner-Pepl JazzZwio has long had a permanent place in the apocryphal pantheon of music.
“Live in Montreux”, a hammer for heart and brain, if you let heart and brain be the anvil.

Die Steirische: „Vitaler Klangmaler“ (Das Künstlerporträt: Harry Pepl)
Heimo Steps
Portrait on page 12 by the manager of gamsbART (Graz concert promoter), written on the occasion of the German Record Critics’ Award (German award for outstanding recordings, chosen by a jury of critics) for “Cracked Mirrors”. Among other things, it tells of the time with DeJohnette in Paris, the film music with Benny Goodman and planned projects in Graz.
His musical paintings are a pleasure to listen to, not least because sensuality and warmth are inherent in them.
He is one of my favourites
Having grown up with the accordion, he does not deny our own musical tradition and lets it flow into his music.
The great stylistic diversity and his unmistakably idiosyncratic playing, not to mention his perfect command of the instrument, make even the most prominent fellow musicians rave.

Preview of the autumn programme of gamsbART (Graz concert promoter, directed by Heimo Steps) at the Catholic student centre Münzgraben. The December programme includes a “special evening” with Pepl, Herbert Joos and Jon Christensen, who received the German Record Critics’ Award for “Cracked Mirrors”, initiated by gamsbART (the text inconsistently gives 16 November). Pepl is also named as a guest on Wolfgang Puschnig’s album “Pieces Of The Dream”.

an incorrigible musical visionary
Pepl was a guitarist of international reputation who, with his idiosyncratic, angular and complex improvisational style, offered a European alternative to the US guitarists

Kronen Zeitung (p. 31, Styria): „Ich glaube an innovative Kräfte“ (gamsbART-Manager Gerhard Kosel im Steirerkrone-Interview)
Interview with Gerhard Kosel about Graz jazz promoters and gamsbART (Graz concert promoter), which was founded by Heimo Steps in 1984. Kosel says that Pepl is not honoured enough in the place that was his adopted home for many years, and describes the Harry Pepl Prize as a means of keeping his memory alive.
Our aim with the Harry Pepl Prize is to keep this flame burning until musicology in Graz also takes up the subject.
