JazzNu (online): „Nalatenschap Harry Pepl op internet gearchiveerd“ new
Nieuwsredactie
Report by the news desk of JazzNu, the Dutch jazz portal (Nieuws section), on Friday, 30 October 2026: a digital archive on the life and work of the Austrian jazz guitarist, composer and improviser Harry Pepl (1945 to 2005) has been online at harrypepl.com since 26 October 2026, looked after by his son Daniel Pepl. The website offers an overview of almost two hundred works, around 110 releases and more than four hundred press publications. The report mentions Pepl’s path from classical guitar to jazz, the Pirchner-Pepl-JazzZwio with the vibraphonist Werner Pirchner (sometimes with Adelhard Roidinger on bass as a third member), his time in Benny Goodman’s band in 1980 and 1981 and in the Michel Portal Unit from 1984 to 1988, and albums for the renowned European jazz label ECM. Dave Holland, Enrico Rava, Wolfgang Puschnig, Steve Swallow, Jack DeJohnette and the Vienna Art Orchestra are named as well. The report singles out Pepl’s work with Dutch musicians: in November 1980 with the trumpeter Ack van Rooyen in the “String Summit” at the SWF New Jazz Meeting in Baden-Baden and Mainz (recorded in 1981 on MPS as “One World In Eight”), and in September 1979 at the Debrecen Jazz Days in Hungary in a duo with the pianist Jasper van ’t Hof. According to the review in Hajdú-Bihari Napló of Sunday, 16 September 1979, Pepl played there in a guitar duo with Voja Brković; Jasper van ’t Hof appeared at the same festival. The report shows a photograph, “Harry Pepl in his home studio”.

Gábor Turi
Review of the 8th Debrecen Jazz Days 1979 (“Festival for five days”): four venues, ten concerts, three jam sessions, more than twenty ensembles and 7,000 visitors, organised by the radio together with the Kölcsey Ferenc cultural centre. Turi divides the performers into three groups according to their performance and places the guitar duo Pepl and Brkovity in the top group, alongside Ganelin, Mirrors, Gusztáv Csík, the duo Viklický and Andršt and Jasper van ’t Hof; he highlights the duo’s virtuoso technique and perfect interplay.
