Kurier (Vienna daily newspaper), p. 12, reviews section: „Markenzeichen Austrojazz“ (Szene Wien: Konzerte mit Miklin, Sokal, Pepl) new

    Gunther Baumann

Review of the concerts by Karlheinz Miklin, Harry Sokal and Harry Pepl at the Szene Wien (a venue in Vienna-Simmering) in the preceding days. Pepl played with Jean-François Jenny-Clark and Daniel Humair, who according to Baumann had come to Vienna to make recordings with Sokal and Pepl; Baumann writes in hymn-like terms about Pepl’s guitar playing.

Thrilling above all was the encounter with Harry Pepl. The guitarist works with berserker force and yet with the tenderest sensitivity.

From a review of the concerts by Karlheinz Miklin, Harry Sokal and Harry Pepl at the Szene Wien (Vienna-Simmering) in the Kurier, a Viennese daily newspaper; Pepl played with Jean-François Jenny-Clark and Daniel Humair.

His solos: absurdly sparkling, dark cascades of notes, cleverly interrupted by oases of chords full of strange, touching harmony.

That was intellectual and at the same time emotional avant-garde jazz.

Kleine Zeitung (daily newspaper, Graz), “Jazzkeller” column: „Jazz-Zwillinge auf Erfolgskurs“ new

    Werner Krause / Leo Lukas

Review of the ECM LP by Pirchner, Pepl and DeJohnette (recorded on a Sunday afternoon), with an announcement of the concert that same evening, Thursday, 16 June 1983, 8 pm, at the Studentenhaus Münzgrabenstraße 59 in Graz, Austria. The newspaper quotes a critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (one of Germany’s leading national dailies).

This really ought not to exist: that in neighbouring Austria such mastery should ripen virtually unnoticed.

A quotation at second hand: the Kleine Zeitung, a Graz daily newspaper, reproduces the voice of a critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a leading German daily, on the Jazzzwio and the ECM LP with Jack DeJohnette.
