First instrument: the accordion

At about the age of seven (the earlier website says eight), Pepl was given an accordion and played Viennese songs, Schubert, Mozart, opera arias and Schlager hits. Attending an accordion competition gave him the „Kick zum Improvisieren“ [“the kick to improvise”]; playing from sheet music soon lost its appeal.
