How the project came about

Daniel Pepl had become aware of the duo of Clemens Salesny and Martin Bayer through a live recording from Porgy & Bess; he knew Salesny from the Salzburger Jazzherbst 2004. Salesny invited Agnes Heginger, whom Harry Pepl had met in the early 1990s at jazz seminars in Zeillern, and the drummer Peter Primus Frosch.1 The double CD was made in eight studio days, mixed and mastered by Daniel Pepl.2

The double CD

The first CD contains recordings of the Lonely Single Swinger Band, the second older compositions from the time of Air Mail and Jazzzwio, with the guests Alex Meissl, Clemens Wenger, Herbert Joos and Mario Rom.3 Newly recorded were, for example, “125/250”, Pepl's “Ballentine for Valentine”.4 The album was released digitally on 18 May 2020 by Fullmax Recordings.

Concerts

The double CD was presented on 5 December 2015 at Porgy & Bess in Vienna, for the tenth anniversary of his death, in the year of his 70th birthday. On 14 May 2016 the quartet played at the INNtöne Jazzfestival in Diersbach.5 In September 2015 Daniel Pepl, Agnes Heginger and Clemens Salesny were guests on the Ö1 (the ORF's cultural radio channel) Jazznacht “Erinnerungen an Harry Pepl”.

Parts

Some pieces and arrangements offer such great freedom that they sound different every time live, and Harry, too, keeps on surprising.
