Backstage at the Maison de la Culture, the arts centre of Amiens, France, during the International Jazz Festival on Saturday, 30 May 1987, before the evening concert. From left: Michel Portal, finger to his lips, Dave Liebman and Harry Pepl; a saxophone reaches across the picture. At that evening’s concert the Michel Portal Unit with Portal, Liebman, Pepl, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Mino Cinelu and Jack DeJohnette recorded the live album “Men's Land”; according to the Magnum Photos caption, it was part of a tour taking in the festivals of Angoulême and Amiens and the Théâtre de Boulogne-Billancourt. The names are given in that caption; who stands where follows from the clothing, which matches Frank Lantiez’s stage photos from Amiens in May 1987.
