41 years ago in Niš: the last documented concert of the Jazzzwio

On Monday, 28 October 1985, the Jazzzwio, Harry Pepl’s duo with the Austrian composer and vibraphonist Werner Pirchner, played at the Naissus Jazz 85 festival in the hall of the Symphony Orchestra of Niš (then Yugoslavia, now Serbia), with the American drummer Barry Altschul and the Swiss bassist Walter Schmocker.

The Jazzzwio photographed from above: Werner Pirchner on vibraphone, Harry Pepl in front on his Gibson Les Paul, both absorbed in playing; place and year are not recorded, probably the 1980s. In front on the left Harry Pepl, behind him Werner Pirchner; the person seated at the back is unknown.

After the concerts in Graz and Kindberg, Styria, Austria, in the same month, it is the last documented concert by Harry Pepl and Werner Pirchner as a duo, after which, ten years on, their paths parted. The live recording of “The Theme” (16:18) was released in 1986 on the festival LP “Naissus Jazz 85” by the Yugoslav label Diskos, with the duo spelt “Duo Pirchner-Perl” on the cover.
