Hip Jargon
Pepl's trio, from which the Jazzzwio emerged
Trio around Pepl in the 1970s, which he expanded by adding Werner Pirchner as a melody instrument. Without Pirchner, the group performed as the Wayne Darling Trio.
Harry Pepl Leader, guitar
In 1975 the trio was looking for a melody instrument, and Pepl brought in Werner Pirchner. When the two played “Stella by Starlight” as a duo for the first time, they noticed immediately, as Pepl remembered it, that they could play well together, and that was how the Jazzzwio began.
The 1975 recording
On Thursday, 25 September 1975, Hip Jargon played with Pepl (guitar), Wayne Darling (double bass) and Fritz Ozmec (drums) in the Great Broadcasting Hall of the Funkhaus in Vienna, Austria; the guest was Werner Pirchner on vibraphone. The recording turned up in the ORF radio archive. Ö1 broadcast it on 5 June 2020 in “In Concert” (presented by Helmut Jasbar) and called Hip Jargon “the nucleus of the famous ‘Jazz-Zwio’”. A critic of the Salzburger Volksblatt had called the music “free jazz for connoisseurs” at the time. The programme included Pirchner’s “Wirf an” and “Wohl oder übel” as well as the jointly written pieces “Pfifferling”, “Squirrel Dance” and “Down At The Ticky Toe”.1
